Who We Are?
- Non-profit 501(c)3
organization
- Board of Directors
is comprised of Druid Hills residents, Emory University staff and faculty,
business and property owners in Emory Village
- Concept for the
organization originated from community workshops sponsored by Georgia
Tech and the Urban Land Institute in 2000
- Our Mission was
written by the community at those workshops:
Create a safe, economically viable, walkable and compact mixed use
community that is an asset and resource to Emory University and the
surrounding historic neighborhoods
- Funded by Druid
Hills Civic Association, Emory University, DeKalb County and individual
contributors
What Have We Accomplished?
- Completed a Revitalization
Plan for Emory Village
- Involved the community
throughout the process
- Encouraged interim
improvements to the Village such as the steps near STATravel
- Encouraged BP
to redevelop in a manner consistent with the master plan
- Established new
design guidelines for commercial development
within the Druid Hills Historic District
- Received designation as a "Livable Center" from the Atlanta
Regional Commission
What is in the
Revitalization Plan?
- Traffic calming
and improved intersection for safety of pedestrians, vehicles, and bicycles
- An improved mix
of retail and restaurants that appeals to residents, nearby workers
as well as students. Increased amount of retail space from 77,000 to
106,000 SF.
- An upscale, pedestrian
friendly village environment with sidewalk cafes along tree lined streets
- New owner occupied
housing above the retail and overlooking Druid Hills Country Club and
a restored Peavine Creek
- Design guidelines
to promote architecture that is distinctive and memorable, but complements
the surrounding neighborhood
- New parks, public
gathering spaces and a new bridge
- Bicycle lanes
along North Decatur Road
- Structured parking
hidden from the streets
- A movie theater
- Calmer traffic
and safer pedestrian environment by narrowing North Decatur Road from
4 lanes to 3 lanes and construction of a traffic roundabout at Oxford,
North Decatur and Dowman
- More restricted
turning movements for cars using north Oxford Road
What are the Next
Steps?
- Test the feasibility
of the road diet and roundabout to determine the implications upon traffic
congestion, cut-through traffic, pedestrian safety and convenience to
the community
- Prepare a zoning
overlay for Emory Village that will permit mixed use developments and
the kinds of development proposed in the revitalization plan
- Continue to involve
Emory Village businesses and property owners, Druid Hills residents,
Emory University, Clifton Corridor institutions and DeKalb County officials
in the planning processes
- Raise additional
financial resources to test the road diet and implement the public improvements
